Pan Twardowski -Polish legend about ambition, flair and magic pact with the devil.
There is a Polish legend about a man named Mr. Twardowski, who is said to have made a pact with the devil himself. It is a tale that has been passed down through generations, and one that is still told today. There are quite a few versions of the legends as the story has evolved and been retold over many centuries.
This is one of the most popular versions of the legend:
Mr. Twardowski was a well-known sorcerer in XVIth century Kraków. Until today it is not certain whether he was a real or fictional character. Twardowski was known for his skills in alchemy and was often consulted by people who wanted him to perform various magical acts. However, his thirst for knowledge and power led him down a dangerous path. One day, he decided that he wanted to know more about the devil and made a deal with him. The devil appeared before Mr. Twardowski and offered him unlimited knowledge and power in exchange for his soul. Mr. Twardowski agreed to the deal, but he was not willing to give up his soul just yet. Instead, he asked the devil for a few more years to enjoy his life before he was taken to hell. The devil agreed to this but made a condition that finally Twardowski will give his soul to the devil in Rome. With time sorcerers became even more powerful and knowledgeable. He was able to perform incredible feats of magic, was respected by many in his community, and was consequently avoiding travels to Rome. Unfortunately, one-day Twardowski lost his vigilance and visited an inn unluckily called “Rome”. When the devil appeared to take his soul, scared Twardowski jumped on a hen and run away to the Moon.
According to legend, Mr. Twardowski still resides on the Moon to this day, longing for his beloved Kraków but too afraid of the devil to return to Earth. On clear nights, it is said that one can catch a glimpse of him walking on the surface of the Moon.
The legend of Mr. Twardowski continues to be a part of Polish culture to this day. In Poland, there are even tourist attractions and landmarks dedicated to Mr. Twardowski and his legends, such as the Twardowski Rocks in Kraków. The story has also been adapted into various forms of art and entertainment, including literature, theater, and film.
